Goodbye Spring, Hello Summer!!
Hello to all of you out there! My name is Chiquita and I am a Junior Nursing major just like my fellow blogger Millie. Of course I am going to be a much better nurse than she, just kidding!! She’s going to be a great nurse wherever she goes. Let me start off by saying thanks for taking the time to read my blog, I really appreciate the support and hope you will visit often.
Well as you all know, the wonderful season of Summer has started. I am doing some work for the Admissions Office this summer and I am also giving tours of the campus so feel free to come on down! We have some truly great people working in the admissions department. Anyways, No one, and I mean NO ONE is more happy than I that Spring is over. Don’t get me wrong, Spring semester wasn’t horrible, it’s just that this past spring was very challenging for me as far as focusing on my schoolwork. Picture this, a 19 yr. old student finally leaves her SUPER strict home and lives on campus for the very first time, she finds her first real boyfriend, gets to go to clubs for the first time, has no curfew for the first time, and gets to make up her own mind about whether she wants to go to class or not for the first time. She realized she would be facing these obstacles if she moved out, but being naive, she thought it would be no problem at all and that it would be easy for her to manage her time.WRONG! WRONG!WRONG! Did I say wrong? All of a sudden, school was not as important, grades began to drop, and suddenly goals seemed out of reach. By the end of the spring semester, the student finds herself barely holding on to her gpa and scholarships. Who was this student? Unfortunately, it was me. I experienced all these things this past semester. Although it was very tough for me to go through, I would not change a thing. I learned that part of growing up is making your own decisions, and unfortunately for me I was choosing to have a social life over an academic one. Before, I really didn’t have a say in the matter because my parents were right there watching my every move, but once the decision making was all on me I fumbled a little bit. So sadly, I will be making up for this past semester during the summer, but I have faith I will get back on the right path.
I didn’t tell you all my story to discourage you from living on campus or making the big leap from your home. I told you so that you will make much better choices than I made once you decide to step out on your own for the first time. It’s going to be exciting and overwhelming and school may not seem so appealing, but you have to focus on why you’re in college: to get a degree and to make $$$$$!! =). It’s perfectly fine to have a social life but remember your grades are what’s going to take you places and help you reach your goals in life. One day the social scene will be gone but your degree will last a lifetime. So look back on my story from time to time and make sure you’re not making the same mistakes!! Or you’ll have to answer to me!! =) Please feel free to ask me any questions about living on campus, classes, or working for admissions. I would love to hear from you all!! Well this is all for now, I got places to go, people to see, and food to eat. =) Stay tuned for the next blog!

How hard is it to get into Austin Peay’s Nursing program? I’m in the military and currently stationed in Texas but I’m trying to pull favors from everywhere so that I can get stationed at Fort Campbell to finish up 4 classes and maybe then it will be easier to find out more information. Since your working in admissions this summer maybe you can answer this for me: I called admissions one day and they told me since I was military I can apply online through GoArmyU but there isn’t any degree plan listed for pre-nursing on the portal. I called GoArmyU and they told me I had to get a degree plan from the school (I asked about printing off the degree plan off the internet they said no they need it from the school). How do I get that if I’m not a student yet? Do you know any nursing students that were in the military that wouldn’t mind talking to me about transitioning out the military into the nursing program? Any further information about the nursing program would be great….

HI Chiquita,
I went to East Carolina University for 2 years now and i’m in a bad rut. I too messed up one semester, but the bad thing was it was my first freshman semester. Now I’m wanting to transfer to APSU because I’m moing to Clarksville to be with my girlfriend and i heard APSU is great! My only problem is my GPA isnt high enough yet, so I was told to transfer to Nashville State Community College and do good for a semster or 2 and the apply for admission to APSU. I’m really hopin this works because I toured the APSU campus and I fell in love with it and i love TN in general. Just wanted to say to everyone also..please dont let your social life overpower your academic life. Trust me it may not seem like your ever gonna get out and do anything, but just think, is it better to have friends and no education to get a job, or is it better to get your education so you can get a job and then hang with friends. The decision is yours, but choose wisely.

Hi Chiquita,
I’m interested in the nursing program @APSU. I was wondering if there was a waiting list or do they accept a certain amount of students per semester? Right now, I attend a Community College and I’m hoping to transfer to APSU next fall. Any other info you would like to add would also be great to know.
